CHUA EAST — The Member of Parliament for Chua East Constituency, Hon. Okoya John Calvin, has called for urgent measures to protect communities living near wildlife habitats following the tragic death of a woman who was attacked and killed by a stray elephant while in her garden.
Addressing the media on Friday, Hon. Okoya said the deceased, identified as Rose, lost her life after she was attacked by the elephant in Chua East Constituency, an incident that has left the local community in shock and mourning.
The legislator revealed that the bereaved family has formally petitioned the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), requesting assistance to meet burial expenses, full compensation for the loss of their mother, support for the deceased's children, and compensation for property destroyed during the incident.
Hon. Okoya said UWA has already committed to providing UGX 2.5 million to support the family as immediate relief.
He explained that the deceased's body is currently being kept at Yot Kom Medical Center. The body will remain in the facility's mortuary pending further communication from the Uganda Wildlife Authority headquarters in Kampala, after which burial arrangements will be announced.
The MP assured the bereaved family that he will meet the Executive Director of the Uganda Wildlife Authority on Monday to discuss additional support and other outstanding concerns arising from the tragedy.
He also appealed to residents to remain calm as discussions continue with the relevant authorities.
Hon. Okoya further urged the Uganda Wildlife Authority to strengthen surveillance in areas frequently affected by stray wildlife by deploying more wildlife rangers to help deter dangerous animals before they reach communities.
He also appealed to the Government of Uganda to provide food assistance to vulnerable communities living in areas affected by increasing human-wildlife conflicts.
The legislator commended the Office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for responding promptly after the incident. He also thanked the area Councillors who stood with the bereaved family during the difficult period.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over recurring cases of human-wildlife conflict in communities bordering protected wildlife areas, where residents continue to face risks while carrying out their daily activities.
